Groceries

Eleuthera has several well-stocked food markets and a few that are less well stocked where you can still buy basic supplies. The prices for groceries are higher in the Bahamas and the selection is not as extensive as in the States. If you have room in your suitcase, bring special items (Starbucks coffee, tortillas, etc). You are permitted to bring a cooler with frozen meats. Here’s a list of local stores:

Eleuthera Supply – This is one of two places to stop on your way to the house. It is in the center of Governor’s Harbor next to the liquor store. Cash only.

Burrows Grocery - Burrows is on the left as you go through Governors Harbour.  It is well stocked with a good selection of food and supplies.

Rock Sound Grocery – This is the best grocery store with the largest selection of items on the island. It is a 30 minute drive south of Double Bay on Queen’s Highway. Watch the road signs in Tarpum Bay directing you south to Rock Sound. You will make a left turn in the middle of Tarpum Bay in order to continue on Queen’s Highway. MC/VISA/Cash.

Sands Groceries, Palmetto Point – You can’t miss the turquoise store in Palmetto Point. It is the closest grocery to Wish (about 5 miles north) but has a limited selection.

Island Produce – This is a nursery that grows and sells produce. Depending on the season you can buy greens, tomatoes, peppers, mangoes, pineapples and other fresh produce. Their arugula is fantastic.

Banks Road Deli – Here you can purchase gourmet items (specialty olive oil, cheeses etc) as well as great sandwiches, croissants, muffins, etc.

Fresh Fish

Fresh fish are caught daily and sold on the docks of Governors Harbour and Tarpum Bay, ten miles to the south of WISH, weather permitting.  The dock at Tarpum generally has a few more fishermen than at Governors Harbour.  There is usually a nice selection of grouper, snapper, lobster and conch.  The fishermen will clean and cut the fish to your specifications.
