Day Trips and Excursions

Harbour Island
At the very northern tip of Eleuthera is Harbour Island and Dunmore Town. It’s actually a separate island which is reachable by a 5 minute water taxi. Although it is at least an hour’s drive north, it is absolutely worth the trip.

Take the water taxi ($4 a person) and rent a golf cart to tour the island on the dock at Dunmore Town. No cars are allowed on the island unless you live there. You’ll find a quaint historic village with souvenir stands, nice shops, marinas, and a few fine hotels like the Pink Sands and Coral Sands resorts. The beach is perhaps the most beautiful in the world- no kidding! You can rent a horse by the hour . They’re not very pretty, but it’s fun to ride along the beach.

There are several excellent restaurants. For lunch we love the Blue Bar at the Pink Sands Hotel or Sip Sips. Both overlook the beach and the Atlantic. Harbor side restaurants include The Landing (romantic street side), Rock House (elegant dining in a sophisticated setting), Harbour Lounge (lovely view of harbor), Valentine’s (marina with shaded dock restaurant).

Cape Eleuthera
Cape Eleuthera is a marina that was never really finished. Located near  the  southern tip of the island, it is about a 45 minute drive. The villages that you see on the way are examples of Bahamian out-island culture.  The Island School is at Cape Eleuthera. It is a private boarding school with an emphasis on marine biology and ecology.

Spanish Wells
Spanish Wells like Harbor Island is reached by a 5 minute water taxi at the northern end of the island. This   community is based on the fishing industry.

The Old Lighthouse
This is a remote point on the southeast corner of the island, just beyond a small village called Bannerman Town. It is difficult to get to because of the lack of signs, and a very, very rough road. It is one of the most beautiful beach spots in the world,  once you reach it. The trip is worth it.  The Bahamas has recently granted a permit to develop it, and it is an international environmental treasure.  It would be nice to see it before any development commences.

Club Med Beach

Directly east from Governors Harbour is Banks Road, the first beach at the bottom of the hill is the site of the old Club Med resort.  Club Med  closed a few years back after a hurricane tore it apart. It’s located on the Atlantic side over the hill from Governor’s Harbor and can be accessed from Banks Road. It’s a great place for sunning, kayaking or snorkeling .

Ten Bay
This beautiful bay is located near us on the Caribbean side of the island. Go about ½ mile south of the Double Bay turnoff and take the dirt road with the “Beach Access” sign and follow it to the beach. This beach is on the Caribbean sea side of the island the water is much more shallow and the waves are generally a lot less rough.  It’s a great beach, especially for younger children.  They can splash in shallow, perfectly clear water. This is also a great place to wade in the shallows and look for sand dollars.

Surfer’s Beach
This is the best spot on the island (some say in all the Bahamas), if you are searching for waves to surf. Holiday Beach and Hatchet Bay Northside Beach are two other nearby surfing spots. January, February, March, September and October are the best times for the catching the best waves.

The Glass Window
Located between Gregory Town and Upper Bogue, the Glass Window is an awesome sight. A very narrow ridge, the width of a bridge, divides the island almost in two separate north and south pieces. There is a beautiful contrast between the wilder  Atlantic on one side and the still, calm waters of the Caribbean on the other side.
